Our community has an important ongoing discourse about what it means to be a “great engineer”. We discuss a myriad of topics from technical mastery to productivity to mentoring. I’ve been an engineer for along time and I have opinions about all of these. But does it matter what the boss thinks? I’m also an engineering manager and I’ve built several successful teams of engineers. I’d like to offer an uncommonly candid view on what it means to be a successful engineer from the perspective of managers and leaders.
